Checking References
One of the single most important questions a hiring manager may ask a recruiter is,
"Have you checked references"? Although most professional recruiters include this task
as part of their qualification process, many employers also check references as part of
their internal process for bringing on new employees and contractors.
Most significant to the reference checking process is how it is carried out. Incorporating a
few simple principles into the process will make it both accurate and lawful.
- Make reference checking a standard business practice for all candidates in the employee selection process.
- Have all job candidates sign a waiver granting you explicit permission to talk to references along with anyone else associated with the candidate's job performance and work history.
- Insist that all job candidates provide pertinent references. References should be individuals with whom the candidate has truly worked with, preferably former supervisors.
- Make certain that when performing a reference check you ask questions only pertaining to job performance.
Keeping these simple principles in mind when it comes to checking references, will help you make the
most informed hiring decision possible while complying with the law!
